Community of Shadows in Taipei

This community workshop moved quickly from a presentation about Shadow Liberation into an interactive experiment in shadow theatre. Small groups developed shadow skits about various manifestations of gender oppression in Taiwanese society.

What does a shadow theatre remix of gender stereotypes from the Taiwanese media look like? I saw a pair of scissors popping overinflated balloon breasts behind the shadow screen.

As with my other work in Taipei, this workshop was hosted by the creative Story Encounter.

Taipei Applied Theatre Training

I had the honor of facilitating this 5 day intensive training in Taipei, Taiwan, hosted by Story Encounter. The group of 10 consisted of Theatre Artists, Teachers, College Students and Consultants.

From Theatre of the Oppressed to Playback and Drama Therapy, the participants were eager to dive into advanced techniques and ask difficult questions, which made our week together rich and engaging. The echoing theme of the week was "Theatre is an act of Love".

Shadows for Social Justice in Taipei

There was little hesitation among the students who turned up for my workshop and Shadow Liberation presentation at the National Taipei University of Education.

In the workshop they brought up: how gender expectations very depending on your age, double standards, and how any bad driver on the road is assumed to be a woman. See a video of one of their skits below.

Water Puppets & Secret Desires

Behind the shadow screen at Taiyuan Puppet Theatre Company's Lin Liu-Hsin Puppet Theatre Museum in Taipei, Taiwan. I met the lead puppet maker and some of the other artists there, who gave me a book and DVD based on a Shadow Theatre play they did, Shadow of Love.

Here I am playing with a Vietnamese water puppet. It's a wood carved puppet controlled by a Bamboo with string and simple levers. The museum's collection was quite extensive. Below are a couple snapshots from the signs in the exhibit on ugly puppets. I was struck by the Drama Therapy sounding descriptions.

Gender Justice at Delhi Law Colleges

Shadow Liberation performed a couple times for Law students in Delhi, 9th of April at Jindal Global Law School and the 10th of April at Campus Law Centre. We were warmly received at both venues and the dialogue extended beyond the limitations of law, and into the complexities of childhood sexual abuse, domestic violence and homophobia.

Come Together: Kolkata

Shadow Liberation and LOK came together at the Weavers Studio Centre for the Arts, in Kolkata, for an evening of interactive and multimedia youth theatre. See the program in the image below.

The studio was full of young artists, and the debut of LOK's play, 5 Grains of Sugar, was well received. Shadow Liberation put on an energetic performance and the audience was fully engaged in interrupting the injustice portrayed. Read more about this event in the article Shadows tell a tale from The Telegraph.
